UKZNs-One-Young-World-Challenge-Inspires-Greatness-on-a-Global-Front

In the aim of strengthening the University`s international profile, forming long standing strategic partnerships and advancing global student mobility, UKZN has joined forces with One Young World (OYW)- a global platform for young leaders, to launch the UKZN OYW Challenge.

OYW is a charity organisation based in the United Kingdom that gathers together the brightest young leaders from all around the world empowering them to make lasting connections that will create a positive change. Founded by Mr David Jones and Ms Kate Robertson in 2009, OYW hosts an annual summit where the most remarkable young talent from every country and sector meet to debate, address and share solutions to the world`s most pressing issues.

The challenge will push UKZN`s top achievers to find innovative solutions for global impact, while giving them a chance to compete for their spot at this year’s summit in London by winning the UKZN 2019 OYW Challenge. The challenge will provide students with a once in a lifetime opportunity to join the world’s best at the prestigious annual OYW Summit.

With delegates from over 190 countries being counselled by world political, business and humanitarian leaders like Sir Richard Branson, Archibishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan, Meghan Markle, Emma Watson, Professor Muhammed Yunus and Jamie Olivier. The summit has grown to become one of the leading global youth summits in the world, representing the largest gathering of international countries.

As attendees, students will get an opportunity to showcase their work to a network of global leaders. After the summit, students will graduate to becoming OYW Ambassadors, enabling them to establish their own initiatives or capacitate already existing initiatives through the power of the OYW network.

The UKZN OYW Challenge comprises of two phases of selection. Phase 1 is where students are required to demonstrate their capacity for leadership and their potential to inspire greatness through a written and video submission. In Phase 2, the finalists are required to display innovative thinking and present their solution for the city, province and country to a panel of amazing judges!   

Applicants have to meet the following requirements:

  • Be UKZN students aged between 18-30 years old
  • Currently atleast in their second year of study and will be enrolled for studies at UKZN for the 2020 academic year
  • Be available between the 21-27 October 2019 to attend the OYW Summit in London
  • Passionate about South Africa and the opportunity to have an impact on global issues
  • Can demonstrate actions taken to initiate climate change
  • Understanding of key local and global issues
  • Be committed to sharing knowledge gains with fellow UKZN students and local application
