The Marvels and Magic of Physical Chemistry.

In my inaugural lecture I will briefly describe my upbringing in a community of Italian immigrants in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s.  I will then discuss how my education led me to specialize in Physical Chemistry and how I found an academic career to be a natural choice.  My interest in Physical Chemistry has led me to undertake research in two main areas, namely, thermodynamics and kinetics.  In particular, I have investigated the thermodynamics of complex formation, pattern formation fueled by convective instabilities and sunscreen photochemistry.  I will describe my main achievements in these particular areas.  I will conclude the lecture with my interest in fostering and developing an interest in science among school learners and how Physical Chemistry can play a major role in this respect.
