Virend Kristen Somers obtained his medical degree cum laude from the University of Natal in South Africa, where he received an Anglo American Open Scholarship and a Natal University Scholarship. He was then awarded a Nuffield Dominion Scholarship to Oxford University in the United Kingdom where he received his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Cardiovascular Physiology. He subsequently was a Post-Doctoral Fellows at the University of Iowa, where he completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship. He served as Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Diseases at the University of Iowa and as Director of the Cardiovascular Neurophysiology Laboratory. In 2000, he was appointed to Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation, where he is also Director of the Clinical Research Unit Sleep Core Laboratory and Cardiovascular Core Laboratory, and is a Mayo Foundation Clinical Investigator. He is also International Director of the International Clinical Research Center in Brno, in the Czech Republic. He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and is an American Society of Hypertension certified Consultant in Hypertension.
