Congratulations-to-all-Comrades-Runners

Team UKZN in high spirits at Comrades 2017.

I take great pleasure in congratulating all of our students, staff and alumni who participated in the 92nd Comrades Marathon.

I thank you for being great ambassadors for UKZN. Your sheer commitment and dedication in participating in one of the world’s greatest marathons is admirable and inspiring.

We have much to be proud of, a notable achievement this year is the high number of runners who took part from the UKZN Athletics Club. Out of 17 registered UKZN runners, 13 finished within the 12-hour mark. Mr Gcino-Fuze Ngcobo was one of the first 1000 runners to cross the finish line.

Of the University’s seven first-time Comrades runners, four completed the marathon and one runner; Mr Nkeka Tseole was awarded a Bill Rowen Medal for finishing within the first nine hours.

Long-standing staff member and a member of Council, Mr Tony Singarum continued to shine as an example for all runners, having impressively completed his 22nd Comrades marathon.

UKZN alumnus and a member of Council, Mr Sammy Mashita, also tackled the marathon earning himself a bronze medal.

Each runner had their own motivations to run this ultimate human race, many, for personal achievement, some to raise funds for their communities, while others ran to honour their loved ones.

I thank all of the student and staff volunteers who attended from as early as 3 am on Sunday to hand out refreshments and cheer the runners on. Thank you also to the Health Sciences students who provided free physiotherapy services for all runners.

All students and staff who are interested in running are encouraged to join and train with the UKZN Athletics Club.  Contact Leigh Anne / 031 260 2281 / Lupkel@ukzn.ac.za for more information.
