UKZN Leadership Inspire Staff to live out REACH

UKZN Leadership take time to motivate staff to live out the University values though Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Client Orientation and Honesty (REACH) as a Corporate Culture. The Vice-Chancellor of University of KwaZulu-Natal, Prof Malegapuru Makgoba encourages REACH in the University as it is in line with the strategic goals of the Institution. Executive Management engaged with the REACH elements, giving their perspectives on what the elements mean to them in the University.

The more respect you give, is the more respect you will receive, which makes for excellent relationships. Excellence is achieving beyond your expectations. Accountability is to account for your activities and accept your responsibilities. Honesty means integrity. Honesty is being genuine. REACH for Greatness.

Respect is always acknowledging other people, and making them know that they matter. It is what we should exude to others. It is about treating all people as equals.

Excellence is not what you do, it’s a state a mind. Learn to strive for excellence, not only in your workplace, but your home and everywhere you go. Excellence means going above and beyond your call of duty.

Accountability means taking responsibility for your actions and not pointing a finger. It means being transparent in everything you do. It means acting in a manner that lets people know that they can rely on you.

Client Orientation is dealing with clients in a professional manner, and therefore providing an excellent service to our clients.

Honesty means being truthful in all you do, as this is the moral fibre that will keep our university together.

How do you keep others happy? It’s not about doing whatever they want, or bending the rules. It’s about doing what’s right, and considering the needs of others – not just our own. It’s about treating people like partners instead of suppliers. It’s about walking a mile in their shoes – because without knowing what drives them, we’ll never understand how to help them. Reach for client orientation. Reach for greatness.

Respect yourself. Respect others. Be excellent, by striving to be the best you can be. Take accountability for your actions. Be honest. Be true to yourself and true to others. REACH for Greatness.

How do we stay accountable?
Is it about putting our hand up, even when it’s easier to remain quiet?
Is it about being responsible no matter the consequence?
Is it about being judged for doing things right, instead of passing judgement of others?
Is it about working towards the same goal, instead of working against each other?
It’s about all of this and more.
REACH for Accountability. REACH for Greatness!!

What is Excellence?

Excellence. It’s not just a state of mind – it’s a state of being. It’s about leading by example, even when you have no example to follow. It’s about digging deep and finding energy you never knew you had. It’s about always putting your best foot forward, even when others around you are stumbling. It’s about rising to the top, even when you can’t see the summit. Reach for excellence. Reach for greatness.

“What is respect? Some say it’s a two-way street. While others say it cannot be bought, just earned. Some command it, while others simply demand it. Respect is something we all want. It’s something everyone wants. It’s more than just the name of a song, or something you show. It comes from within and it’s not something you should be without. Reach for respect. Reach for greatness.”
