Malherbe is a place where everyone feels at home. We encourage students to participate in all activities performed the residence. For example, we have the Malherbe Soccer Team, which is doing great in the campus league. The soccer team was formed in 2003. Most of the players who were playing during that year were SFP students. In that same year Malherbe F.C. was participating in two leagues that is Campus League and WOFA, which is a WOB domestic league. In the Campus league the team ended up in position three on the log and position two in WOFA. So it can be said that 2003 was the year in which Malherbe F.C. was born. In 2004 we only participated in the Campus League because the WOFA management refused to allow us to play in their league, so that led us to Join Campus League only. We did not do well that year because we had problems in the goalkeeping department. We had to convert some players and use them as goalkeepers. So in the log we were position five, which was not too bad.
2005 is the year that will be remembered by most of the Malherbe players and supporters. Even though we failed to will the Campus League but at least we managed to the Student Housing Sports Day which was held on the 01 October 2005. This was the first time in the history of campus football that Malherbe won something. The Sports Day also know as the Inter Res. It is the biggest sporting event on campus, where every residence wants to prove the their supporters that they are the best on campus. For players, it is very difficult because every player wants to participate and be seen during this day.
This year we were planning to have Malherbe
Netball Team which will participate in the Netball Campus League. Our
Sports Officer (Jabulisile Ngcobo) was working with other sports officers
to start our first ever Netball Campus League. She also invited Westville residences so that we can compete in the inter
varsity level. The Malherbe Netball Team was able to beat the Westville
strong side, as for the Soccer guys I wish I can say the same thing, but
unfortunately they lost 1-0 and WOB lost 2-0. Congratulations to our
Netball Team because that was their first competitive match. I am
happy to say that Finally our Sports Officer has finally succeeded in
getting the Team. The team will be participating in the first ever
Netball Campus League which is starting soon.
Each and Every year in Malherbe the House Committee and the Residence
Assistants organise a
Malherbe Sports Day. This is when
students go and play different games at Green-fields Soccer Field. Some of
the sports that are played are, soccer, netball, volleyball, athletics,
tug of war and other games. The Malherbe sports day is done to
prepare students for the Student Housing Sports Day. This is where we
select or note students who are going to represent Malherbe Residence
during the Student Housing Sports Day which is held yearly in September or
October. Unfortunately it seems as if this year we are not going to have
it because we had Fun Day and Fun Evening.
