Travel and Hotel Information

Pietermaritzburg has a strong colonial heritage, however, this vibrant town has a great mix of Indian, Zulu and English-speaking people. Pietermaritzburg also referred to as the City of Choice.

TRANSPORT DETAILS

Transport will be provided for delegates arriving at Oribi Airport and Pietermaritzburg City to the Conference venue as well to the nearby Hotels and B&Bs. Delegates arriving from Durban International Airport, will need to make their own transport arrangements to Pietermaritzburg. Pietermaritzburg is accessible by road and air.

BY AIR

For delegates flying to South Africa from overseas destinations, there are various alternatives for getting to Pietermaritzburg:

  • Alternative 1. Your return flight to Pietermaritzburg will include a transfer at Johannesburg International Airport. A connecting flight will take you directly to the Oribi Airport in Pietermaritzburg. Oribi Airport (serviced by light aircraft only – twin engine turboprop) is approximately 2.5 kilometres from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus. The flying time from Johannesburg to Pietermaritzburg is around 55 minutes.

  • Alternative 2. Your return flight to Durban International Airport will include a transfer at Johannesburg International Airport. A domestic connecting flight (Boeing 737 jet aircraft) will then take you to Durban. The flying time from Johannesburg to Durban is approximately 1 hour. Either use a bus/coach or hire car at Durban International Airport to get from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

BY ROAD

Getting from the Airport to the conference venue (Pietermaritzburg), there are various options:

OPTION 1: FROM DURBAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

  • Car Rental from Airport Terminals. For both international and South African delegates, there are Car Rental Services such as Argus, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, Imperial etc., which are located in Arrivals areas and the trip to Pietermaritzburg takes about +/- 1 hour 15 minutes.  As you leave the airport, stay right at the traffic lights on the bridge over the N2, cross the bridge over the N2, then turn right at the traffic lights onto the R102. Follow the blue signs, and go onto the N2 (direction Stanger / Pietermaritzburg). After about 10 km take the N2/N3 interchange and keep left in the Pietermaritzburg / Johannesburg direction (N3). From the N3 take Exit 76 (Pietermaritzburg/Durban Road/City), at the fourth set of traffic lights turn LEFT into King Edward Ave and pass the first set of traffic lights, then you will see the entrance to the University of KwaZulu-Natal on your left (view map).

  • Airport Shuttle Service. Cheetah Coaches to Pietermaritzburg are available on a daily basis and can be found outside the Domestic Arrivals. To make bookings please phone: +27 (0) 33 3424444

OPTION 2: FROM ORIBI AIRPORT (PIETERMARITZBURG)

  • KM Conference Shuttle Service. The shuttle service will leave the airport at specific times as determined by the arrival times of the largest number of delegates.

  • Car Rental from Airport Terminals. Rental cars (Avis and Budget) are available for hire at the airport terminal. As you leave the airport, turn right out of the airport gates into Oribi Road and go straight roughly 2.5 kilometres. Oribi Road becomes King Edward Ave. Once you cross the intersection with Ridge Road, then pass the traffic lights. As you drive, on your right you will see the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Main Campus entrance gate.

  • Meter Taxis/Cabs. Delegates can use the following meter taxis from Oribi Airport to the University of KwaZulu-Natal:
