Diploma in Oral Health

The School of Dentistry provides learning opportunities within the field of Oral Health at undergraduate level. The School subscribes to lifelong learning and therefore offers two programmes for continuous professional development. In contributing to the National Health Plan, relevant research is conducted in this field of study. The Diploma programme aims to train Oral Health Professionals as part of the dental
team in order play a preventive, promotive, supportive, curative and rehabilitative role in the public and private sectors.


Entrance requirements

Matriculation exemption is required and a pass in Biology at HG 'E' or SG 'D', plus an interview. A pass in Physical Science or Mathematics at HG 'E' or SG 'D' will be an added advantage. 36 matriculation points are required for application.

Bachelor of Communication Pathology (Speech - Language Pathology)

The purpose of this qualification is to provide South Africa, and KwaZulu-Natal in particular, with skilled Speech-Language Pathologists, to ensure effective, efficient and accessible speech-language pathology services in the public and private sectors, e.g., in hospitals, special schools and private practice. The service delivery will include assessment and treatment of Speech Sound System Disorders, Voice Disorders, Cleft Palate and other Cranio-facial Disorders, Fluency Disorders, Developmental Language Disorders, Language LearningDisability, Neurologically Acquired Speech and Language Disorders in children and adults as well as individuals with specific disorders e.g., cerebral palsy, autism and mental handicap.

Bachelor of Communication Pathology (Audiology)

The purpose is to provide South Africa, and KwaZulu-Natal in particular, with skilled Audiologists, to ensure effective, efficient and accessible hearing health care service delivery in the public and private sectors, e.g., in hospitals, special schools and private practice. The service delivery includes hearing assessments (from infants to the elderly), specialized diagnostic testing, the fitting of hearing aids, hearing conservation programmes in industry, and therapy with hearing impaired children and adults.

The purpose of the degree is to offer a unique programme in health sciences that allows a wide choice of career specialisation after graduation. Two career streams are currently offered. Stream 1 is for careers requiring core knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology. Stream 2 is for careers in the health sciences e.g., Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Sports Sciences and Bio-Medical Technology. The three-year inter-Faculty programme involves an in-depth study of how the human body functions. The student will acquire knowledge of the subcellular, cellular and whole body mechanisms by which the human organism survives and interacts within its environment both in health and disease. Career opportunities for graduates exist in medical, pharmaceutical and biological research laboratories, the food and beverage industries and in the education sector including schools, technikons and universities. Learners will acquire a social responsibility to constructively apply the knowledge and skills to enhance both the quality of life and the environment. Bachelor of Occupational Therapy

The programme in Occupational Therapy aims to provide South Africa, and KwaZulu-Natal in particular, with a cadre of skilled occupational therapy staff to ensure effective, efficient and accessible occupational therapy service delivery in both public and private sectors. The programme more specifically aims to develop competent and confident occupational therapists who are able to practice occupational therapy in a wide variety of health, welfare, educational and industrial settings. The qualification, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, allows the graduate professional to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Occupational Therapist.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy

The Discipline of Physiotherapy at the Westville campus is the only training centre for physiotherapists in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The selection of students is based on academic achievement. An interview is also conducted to assess the interpersonal skills of students selected. In order to accommodate learners with diverse backgrounds and abilities, a modular programme is offered. The Bachelor of Physiotherapy qualification has both national relevance and international reciprocity.

Bachelor of Sport Science

This programme aims to provide students with a greater understanding of the physiology and scientific bases for human performances in training, competition and recovery from sport and exercise. Further, it provides students with skills for recreation management, the health and fitness industry, coaching, teaching, working with disabled persons, with chronic disease patients and the enhancement of sport performance through psychological means and the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. The three-year programme provides opportunities for graduates in the field of personal training, sports coaching, management of health and wellness centres, medical representatives for pharmaceutical companies and recreation officers in the private and government sectors.
