Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences administers a wide range of undergraduate degrees of international standing. Those interested in the intellectual concerns of the Humanities, the Arts and the Social Sciences will find many stimulating subjects which can be pursued as majors or as ancillary courses towards a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Social Science degree. This type of degree can form a useful background to postgraduate study in one or other of the majors, in Education and in certain professional disciplines.

In addition, those interested in more directed study may register for a programme degree (see below) or for one of the specific qualifications (such as the Bachelor of Social Work), which can lead to professional status – sometimes upon graduation with the degree itself, but more often by providing access to postgraduate study toward professional qualification.

Similarly, diplomas are offered in Music Performance and in Proficiency in Translation.

For those applicants who would not otherwise qualify for university study, or who would not be able to compete for a place in degree courses, there are access routes and foundation courses available.

Finally, the Faculty offers a range of certificates which can be obtained for studies in certain areas that do not lead to graduation with a degree or the award of a diploma.

This will happen for first year registrations as early as 2005. Although students are currently required to apply to particular campuses, they will be informed about registration processes and sites of programme delivery for first-year programmes for 2005 in due course.

Entrance requirements

Unless otherwise stated, the basic requirements for application for all the qualifications offered by the
Faculty are the possession of a Senior Certificate with matriculation endorsement (exemption) and at
least 24 points. A score of 32 points or more will usually ensure admission. Applicants with scores ranging from 24 to 31 points may be required to write an admission test, and final selections will be based on the test results. Applicants without matriculation endorsement or with low points may gain admission through the successful completion of an approved access course.

Duration

Unless otherwise stated, the degrees and diplomas offered by this Faculty require a minimum of three years of full-time study or four years of part-time study, while the certificate courses require a minimum of one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. Please note that only a few courses and qualifications are offered in part-time hours.

Degree structure

General studies (i.e., the BA and the BSocSc) degrees consist of two majors and a relatively free choice of elective modules.

Programme degrees (e.g., the BA in Media and Communication or the BSocSc in Psychology) consist, usually, of one major subject and a group of cognate elective modules, but some programme degrees include two full major subjects.
A ‘normal’ curriculum consists of four modules per semester at the first andsecond levels, and two to four modules per semester at the third level.
