Faculty of Science & Agriculture

In 2005 the Faculty of Science and Agriculture will offer programmes at the Howard College, Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses. However, not all programmes or majors are offered at all campuses. In particular, Agriculture is offered only on the Pietermaritzburg campus.

Qualifications offered
The following qualifications are offered in the Faculty:

• Bachelor of Agriculture
• Bachelor of Agricultural Management
• Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
• Bachelor of Science in Dietetics
• Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition
• Bachelor of Science

For students whose Senior Certificate results do not satisfy the entrance requirements below, there are also two access programmes:

• Four-year Bachelor of Science (Augmented Programme) – Howard College only

• Science Foundation Programme – Pietermaritzburg and Westville only.

Entrance requirements

For all programmes (except the Science Foundation Programme) a full matriculation endorsement is required with a minimum of 34 points. In all programmes (except the access programmes) applicants should also have at least a ‘B’ at standard grade (SG) or an ‘E’ at higher grade (HG) in Mathematics, and at least one of Physical Science, Biology or Agricultural Science with at least a ‘B’ at SG or an ‘E’ at HG.

In addition, for subjects that involve more Mathematics (such as Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science), the minimum Mathematics requirement is an ‘A’ at SG or a ‘D’ at HG. Programmes that demand this higher Mathematics qualification are marked by an asterisk in the table below.

At Howard College, the BSc in Actuarial Science demands 38 matric points, plus an ‘A’ at HG in Mathematics. The BSc in Bio-Medical Sciences demands 42 matric points, a ‘C’ at HG in both Biology and Physical Science, plus an ‘A’ in Mathematics at SG or a ‘D’ at HG.
Alternative Admission
Candidates who do not meet these minimum requirements and are from disadvantaged schools may apply to enter the Faculty via an access programme. The four-year Augmented programme requires matriculation exemption while the Science Foundation programme does not.

NOTE: It should be understood that all of the above are minimum requirements. There are also constraints due to limitations of space. Satisfying the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee entry into a particular programme.
Duration
With the exception of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, all first degrees require a minimum of three years of full-time study. The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture requires a minimum of four years.

Students in the Augmented four-year programme will take an additional year, while students in the Science Foundation Programme do a preliminary year before embarking on degree studies.

These are both three-year qualifications offered only in Pietermaritzburg.
The Bachelor of Agriculture is aimed at producing graduates who will becomedevelopment programme/project managers and leaders. This should not be confused with the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (see below).

The Bachelor of Agricultural Management is aimed at producing graduates who understand economics, finance and business and who can apply this knowledge at farm, agribusiness and policy levels.

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
Pietermaritzburg (KN-P-BSA)

This is a four-year qualification offered only in Pietermaritzburg. Students may specialize in:

• Agribusiness with specialization in Animal Science, Crop Science, Food Processing, Horticultural Science, Wildlife Management Science
• Agricultural Economics
• Animal and Poultry Science
• Biochemistry
• Crop Science
• Forestry
• Genetics
• Grassland Science
