Philosophy on the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal has a long and proud history. Past members of the philosophy staff include J.N. Findlay, D.J. O’Connor, Gordon Hunnings, James Moulder and Michael Pendlebury.

Philosophy at Pietermaritzburg is now taught as a programme within the School of Human and Social Studies, and will soon be part of a new School of Philosophy and Ethics that will involve all 3 campuses of the new University.

Philosophy courses are taught by four full-time philosophers, assisted by a talented band of part-time staff. Some of the courses offered in the philosophy programme can be taken as individual electives, while all contribute to the philosophy major. A growing number of philosophy courses are taught outside of the philosophy programme, as part of other courses of study such as law and science. Postgraduate qualifications that are offered in the programme are the B.A.(Hons), B.Soc.Sci(Hons), M.A. (by coursework or thesis) and Ph.D. The undergraduate Philosophy, Politics and Law programme is also administered from within the ranks of the philosophy staff. We are a department that works hard at our teaching, particularly in making English-language philosophy accessible to second-language students. We maintain close links with the philosophers on the Howard College campus of the university, and the philosophers at the Westville campus.
