MICHAEL CHAPMAN

South Africa

Michael Chapman is Professor of English and Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Natal in Durban. He has published widely on South African literature. His books include Douglas Livingstone: A Critical Study of his Poetry(1981), Soweto Poetry(1982), The Drum Decade: Stories of the 1950s(1989), Southern African Literatures(1996), and, most recently, The New Century of South African Poetry (2002) which is being launched during the festival.

 

MARGARET DAYMOND

Margaret Daymond is a Professor in the English Studies Programme at the University of Natal, Durban and a Fellow of the University. Her research and teaching interests are writing by women, particularly women in Africa, questions of gender and feminist theory. She is currently working on the first volume in an Africa-wide project called 'Women Writing Africa'. Her most recent book is South African Feminisms: Writing, Theory, and Criticism 1990 - 1994. She is an editor of the journal Current Writing: Text and Reception in Southern Africa.

 
 

ASHWIN DESAI

Dr Ashwin Desai has published three books. The fourth, The Poors of South Africa: Race, Class and Social Movements in Post-Apartheid South Africa, is to be published by Monthly Review Press and launched in New York in April. He lectures part-time in Journalism at Natal Technikon and writes a weekly column in a local newspaper. He holds a masters degree from Rhodes University and a doctorate from Michigan State University.

Dr Ashwin Desai est l’auteur de trois livres. Le quatrième, The Poors of South Africa : Race, Class and Social Movements in Post-Apartheid South Africa, sera publié par Monthly Review Press et sortira à New York au mois d’avril. Il enseigne le journalisme à mi-temps au Technikon du Natal et écrit des chroniques hebdomadaires dans un journal local. Il a obtenu une maîtrise à l’université de Rhodes et un doctorat à l’université du Michigan.

ASHRAF JAMAL 

South Africa

Ashraf Jamal has, for the past decade, worked as a cultural analyst, art critic and painter, playwright and theatre director, novelist and short story writer. He is a lecturer in the School of Language, Culture and Communication at the University of Natal. Jamal was awarded the Canadian New Brunswick Writer's Federation Prize for his play, Uncle Sky Takes His Yoyo To the Prairie, and he has twice been selected for Pick of the Fringe at the Grahamstown Theatre Festival. His play, Severance, was selected for the FNB Vita Award and his novel, Love Themes for the Wilderness, was selected for the MNET Book prize and has since been translated into German. His latest books, A Million Years Ago In The Nineties and The Shades, published by Brevitas, will be launched at the Time of the Writer 2002 festival.

JOHN MATSHIKIZA

John Matshikiza was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and grew up in Lusaka and London. He trained in drama in London, and worked for many years there as an actor, writer and director. He returned to South Africa in 1991, and has since been working in theatre, film, television and print media. With the Lid Off, a joint collection of columns written by his father, Todd Matshikiza, and himself, was published by Mail & Guardian Booksin 2000.

John Matshikiza est né à Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud, et a grandi à Lusaka et à Londres. Il a suivi une formation de comédien à Londres et a travaillé de nombreuses années là-bas comme acteur, écrivain et metteur en scène. Il est retourné en Afrique du Sud en 1991, et travaille depuis dans le milieu du théâtre, du cinéma, de la télévision et de la presse écrite. SARAH NUTTALL

Sarah Nuttall is Senior Researcher at the Wits Institute of Social and Economic Research in Johannesburg. Until recently she was lecturer in English Language and Literature at the University of Stellenbosch. She is editor of Text, Theory, Space: Land, Literature and Historyin South Africaand Australia(Routledge 1996), Negotiating the Past: The Making of Memory in South Africa(Oxford, 1998) and Senses of Culture: South African Culture Studies(Oxford 2000). She has published essays on South African literature and culture.

Sarah Nuttall fait partie de l'équipe de recherche de l'Institute of Social and Economic Research de l'université du Witwatersrand à Johannesburg. Elle enseignait jusqu'à récemment au département de langue et littérature anglaises à l'université de Stellenbosch. PETER RIPKEN

Germany

Peter Ripken , is presently, since 1987, Director for the Society for the Promotion of African, Asian and Latin American Literature in Frankfurt. This is a non-profit literary agency for authors and publishers from the Southern Hemisphere. From 1984 - 1986 he was Senior Editor with Radio Voice of Germany, the English language service for Africa. His special experiences include being consultant and advisor with regard to Africa and African publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair; management of the German collective stand at the Zimbabwe International Book Fair; and advisor for organizers of literary festivals and conferences. Since 1966 he has published in many books and journals about African subjects, and has collaborated in many anthologies, handbooks and travel guides.

Peter Ripken est Directeur de la Société pour la Promotion de la littérature d'Afrique, d'Asie et d'Amérique du Sud à Frankfort depuis 1987. C'est une agence littéraire à but non lucratif pour les auteurs et les éditeurs de l'hémisphère sud. De 1984 à 1986, il était rédacteur en chef pour la radio allemande Voice of Germany, au Service de langue anglaise pour la région Afrique. Il a entre autres été consultant et conseiller en matière d'Afrique et d'édition africaine à la Foire du Livre de Frankfort ; responsable du stand collectif allemand à la Foire Internationale du Livre du Zimbabwe ; et conseiller auprès de festivals littéraires et de conférences. Depuis 1966, il a publié dans de nombreux livres et journaux sur l'Afrique, et a collaboré à plusieurs recueils, manuels et guides de voyage.

 

ALAN SWERDLOW

Theatre performer, writer and director, Alan Swerdlow , is also the Arts and Entertainment Specialist for national radio station SAfm, where he is the station movie critic and deputises for the actuality programme AM Live. Apart from broadcasting, Alan is producer and editor of the weekly Arts programme, Art of the Matter, as well as the weekly literary radio journal, The Bookshelf. He is a member of the judging panel for the annual AmaBoeke-Boekeawards. With a deep passion for theatre and literature, he is much in demand as speaker on various aspects of South African Theatre and Entertainment.

Artiste de théâtre, écrivain et metteur en scène, Alan Swerdlow est également spécialiste des arts et divertissements à la radio nationale Safm, où il a la fonction de critique de cinéma et assure l'intérim de l'émission d'actualité AM Live. En dehors de ses activités radiophoniques, Alan est producteur et rédacteur de l'émission hebdomadaire Art of the Matter ainsi que de l'émission radiophonique littéraire hebdomadaire The Bookshelf. Il est membre du jury de la remise du Prix annuel AmaBoeke-Boeke. Passionné de théâtre et de littérature, il est très demandé lorsqu'il s'agit de traiter des aspects variés du théâtre et des divertissements en Afrique du Sud.
