Professor Joseph Ayee is a full Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Social Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon. He obtained his PhD in Political Science and Public Policy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has an impressive record of publications in several areas that include civil service, state enterprises and public finance and has published six books and chapters in books. He was Chair in Leadership Studies at the UNESCO/United Nations University Leadership Academy at the University of Amman in Jordan.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor is the overall Head of the College and is part of the University Executive Team:

  • Responsible for the implementation of the vision and advancing the principles and mission of the College through planning and monitoring in the core business of the University ( teaching and learning, research, social engagerment, innovation
  • Consults and reviews with the DVC (Research) on matters of research programmes and resources.
  • Promote transformation and equity, staff and student development and quality assurance.
  • Consults and reviews with the DVC (T&l) on teaching and learning matters and related activities.
  • Is responsible for managing the overall teaching and learning, research and community outreach programmes and strategy. This includes collaborations and engagements with other academic and support units within the University.
  • Provides academic, research and general intellectual leadership
  • Is the primary budget holder and accounting official for the fiscal operations of the College.
  • Oversee the effective management of resources within the College and the University
  • Is principally responsible for the engagement, retention and development of staff and students within the College.
  • For the overall development of the College Development Programme and Strategy.
  • Inreach, outreach and service learning.
  • Identifies and promotes collaborations with other Colleges, institutional units and/or Faculties in activities that promote scholarship, social responsiveness, teaching and research.
  • Chairs all College Committees.
  • Perform ceremonial functions within the University and the College.

Professor John Cantius Mubangizi (LLB (Makerere), LLM (Cape Town), LLD (Durban-Westville)) is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head, College of Law & Management Studies. He reports to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal and his responsibilities include playing a leadership role and performing the day-to-day management and leadership duties and functions in the College of Law and Management Studies, including:
  • Academic vision and planning within the College;
  • Fostering and management of research;
  • Promotion of multi-disciplinary teaching and research programmes;
  • Selection of quality staff and their subsequent development;
  • Selection of students into the College;
  • Educational development within the College;
  • All aspects of research and academic quality assurance;
  • Participation in university decision-making, mainly at the executive level;
  • Chairing of committees; and
  • Administration of college finances.

He is the author of one book and more that thirty peer-reviewed SAPSE-accredited journal articles.

Besides his leadership role as part of the University Executive, Professor Rob Slotow is a Professor within the School of Biological and Conservation Sciences, with his research students and laboratory based on the Westville Campus. He is also the Director of the Amarula Elephant Research Programme, an official Research Unit at UKZN. He obtained his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1993, and was appointed to the then University of Natal in 1996. His main areas of research are:
(1) Management of ecologically and economically important large mammals.
(2) Evolutionary and ecological processes driving biodiversity.
(3) Conservation management decision-making. Professor Slotow also has a strong interest in Curriculum development, and in processes to improve quality in teaching and learning.

Ms Nomonde Mbadi has obtained an MBA and has over 10 years experience in the Higher Education sector. She is the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs at the Durban University of Technology, a position she has held for the past six years. She held the position of Director of the Tabeisa Enterprise Centre – a community outreach initiative.

Professor Vithal (BA(Hon)) (UDW), UHDE (with distinction) (UDW), BEd Hons (cum laude)(UN), MPhil (Cantab), dr. scient (Aalborg University Denmark)) is a highly regarded academic with an outstanding record of research and publications. She is recognized for her dynamic academic leadership in the field of Teaching and Learning. Her responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership on Teaching and Learning
  • Developing University Teaching and Learning policies and monitoring consistent University wide implementation
  • Curriculum transformation
  • Implementing the Language Policy in relation to Teaching and Learning
  • Quality Promotion and Assurance
  • Promoting student access, throughput and success
  • Supporting institutional research and promoting research-led teaching and learning in the University.

Professor Meyerowitz joined the University of Natal at Howard College in 1984 as a contract lecturer in the Computer Science department. In 1989 she accepted a permanent position as Senior Lecturer and in 2001 was promoted to Associate Professor. She served as Assistant Dean in the Faculty of Science at Howard College from 1999 and following the merger was appointed Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture. As Deputy Dean she played a leading role in the relocation of the Faculty from Howard College and its consolidation on the Westville campus and was responsible for overseeing the renovations and infrastructural development on the Westville campus to house the merged Faculty. She has served on a number of University Committees and has a thorough knowledge and understanding of University and Faculty administrative processes.

Dr Mojaki Mosia obtained a PhD in Leadership in Performance and Change at the University of Johannesburg and leaves the position of Director Human Resources BMW Group South Africa to join UKZN. His previous positions include Human Resources Executive at Adcock Ingram Healthcare, Adcock Ingram Critical Care and Human Resources Development Manager at Tiger Brands.

Ms Mochaki Masipa holds a Masters degree in Human Movement Science from Rhodes University and is the acting Director Student Affairs of the Turfloop Campus at the University of Limpopo. She has held several academic positions and has senior management experience in Student Affairs at the former University of the North.

The Chief Finance Officer, Mr Hollie Clarkson (CA (SA), BCom (Rhodes), PG Dip Tax (Natal), PG Dip Forensic Auditing & Criminal Justice (Natal)) reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor, but is accountable also variously to the chairpersons of the University’s Finance Committee, the Audit and Risk Committee and the Resource Planning Committee. His responsibilitie include:

  • Providing strategic leadership in respect of University finances
  • Playing an advisory role to the University Council, the Vice-Chancellor, other members of Executive Management and key stakeholders, including the University’s subsidiaries and those externally-funded affiliated units administered by the University
  • Timely, accurate and regular preparation, presentation and monitoring of the University’s budgets and for reporting on its financial performance and position by way of statutory financial statements and a variety of other reports as necessary
  • Overseeing the operational management of the University Finance Division and the day-to-day activities of its staff on five campuses and within all four Colleges and support service divisions.

The Finance Division comprises approximately 150 posts within four Directorates, which are functionally responsible for the efficient and effective management of the portfolios listed below, the directors of which report directly to the Chief Finance Officer, as follows:

Born in Manchester, England, Mr Charles William Poole is a Diplomate and Graduate in Building and Construction Management and holds a Masters Degree in Management and Organisational Development. He holds full membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). He has previously worked in the United Kingdom in construction and further education; subsequently in South America and East Africa with the United Kingdom Government Aid programmes in Further & Higher Education; in South Africa with Higher Education and commerce for over 23 years. Poole set up and managed a Technikon in the former Ciskei and has been in Distance Higher Education for the last 10 years.
